I think that the PNG format specification was done with the net in mind, and it has capabilities other formats hasn't.

It can store graphics in 8-bit and 24-bit color deep, so it can substitute JPGs too, with the advantage of lossless compression, so no more of those problems in high contrast areas. It has true alpha transparency, and gamma correction. I think that this kind of stuff is needed if we want to make documents that render as intented in any machine.

It's the same problem and the same solution that we have with CSS. etc...
