As well as providing a basic intro to JavaScript for the newcomer, the main focus of the book is on developing "intelligent" Web sites. "Intelligent" Web pages are pages that can interact with their readers to offer the same high-quality, individualized information and advice that you would provide if you were present in person. They do this by storing and retrieving aspects of your knowledge and expertise. By handling tasks that would otherwise require human attention, intelligent pages can add considerable value to your Web site. This added value can accrue to you, the Web site developer, and to visitors to your site. Your Web pages can respond individually to each visitor, analyzing his or her particular requirements and giving advice accordingly.
The first part of the book provides a gentle introduction to JavaScript basics. No previous experience of JavaScript is required. Nor is any previous programming experience assumed. Techniques are introduced with simple examples. The code is listed in full and is clearly explained - there is a Web site with all the code also. The book goes on to introduce more advanced "intelligent" programming techniques.
